The White House has been home to every U.S. president since John Adams.  It was originally constructed in 1792-1800, but was burned by the British in the War of 1812.   The reconstruction closely resembled the original plan.

Some interesting facts regarding the White House:

  • Food was prepared in fireplaces until the first cookstove was introduced in the 1850s.
  • Telephones were wired into the White House during the Rutherford B. Hayes administration of 1877-1881.
  • Electricity made it's appearance in the Benjamin Harrison administration of 1889-1893.
  • The West Wing offices were created because the family of Theodore Roosevelt took up so much space.
  • The Oval Office was created during a remodel in 1909 during the administration of William Howard Taft.
  • The White House was retrofitted with steel framing during the the Harry S. Truman administration in the early 50s when it was found to be unsound.
